At Amber, Kilkenny Women’s Refuge, fundraising is not just a means of raising money, while it is a vital one, but also a very important way of promoting the message and goals of our service. Amber, Kilkenny Women’s Refuge provides emergency short term Refuge accommodation and support services including Support and Information, a 24-hour Helpline, Outreach, Court Accompaniment, Aftercare, Awareness Raising, Group Programmes, Counselling and Play Therapy.
At present we are solely funded by Tusla (the Child and Family Agency) to run as a Refuge and Support Service in Kilkenny and Carlow. We are also funded by the Commission for the Support of Victims of Crime partly towards our Court Accompaniment service. We receive various other grants on an “ad hoc” basis. One grant in particular for our Counselling service. This means that when this grant ceases, we may not be able to continue to provide a Counselling service to our clients, including Play Therapy for children. This service is vital to the healing and recovery process from the trauma they have experienced in their own individual situations.
Without donations, Amber would truly be lost. In general, people are excellent to support the service when it comes to donating food, clothes, toiletries, vouchers for local Food and Clothes shops etc. These are so important to us as sometimes women and children leave their domestic violence situation with literally just the clothes on their back and nothing else. This allows us to give families the items they need or the independence to go and buy what they need themselves.
As a service, we constantly have to turn over our rooms/units, replace furniture and furnishings and keep the Refuge as homely as possible for all the women and children who come to stay with us. This is very important to us to create a safe, secure and homely environment. This means we need funds available to do these upgrades and to replace items as required.
We are also at present in the middle of making our building Fire and Safety compliant which means we have lots of work to be carried out. We have to install a new Fire Alarm System and we may have to look at building works to make more office and storage space. We also have to do some work to our outside garden and play area.
It is most beneficial to receive monatory donations so we ourselves can best chose where the money is needed to be spent, as a priority. We are very open and transparent with this and can provide details of how and when the money has been spent. All of your donations will benefit our clients and nobody else.
The demand for our Service is continuing to grow and we have great plans in developing the service into the future. Our main focus will be on developing our Outreach and Childcare Service and hence money is required to do this.
